Safety

A safe club

At A.E.W. we take safety seriously, both physically and socially. Good protective equipment helps you fence safely, and a positive club culture helps you feel welcome. Together they make a club where everyone can feel confident on and off the piste.

Equipment safety

Fencing is a relatively safe sport, thanks in large part to protective clothing and quality equipment. Beginners borrow equipment from the club; if you keep fencing, you gradually acquire your own gear. First items needed: weapon, body wire, glove, mask and underplastron, and a chest protector where needed. The KNAS sets equipment requirements by age category; see the table below.

Safe sports environment

The social side is just as important. That is why we have arranged the following:

  • A board member is present on every fencing night.
  • One confidential contact person, known to fencers and parents.
  • Trainers, board members and volunteers are asked for a Certificate of Conduct (VOG).
  • Incidents are responded to immediately.
  • The NOC*NSF code of conduct is endorsed and enforced.

Confidential contact person

Have a question, want a conversation, or something to report? Contact Caroline van Tongeren by email. For more serious incidents, you can also turn to the NOC*NSF Sports Trust Point.
